Challenge
Student groups have to build a launcher with the materials given to fling a plastic cube. They do not have to use all of the materials but must use at least 4 items. The plastic cube must completely be launched by the contraption, not by any human force. Students should try to get the cube to launch the farthest distance.

Materials

  • cup
  • plastic cube
  • 6 popsicle sticks
  • plastic spoon
  • 2 rubber bands
  • 2 feet tape
  • 2 feet string
  • scissors

Hints and Tips
  1. Have supplies ready to go in each cup for the groups.
  2. For final testing, go outside in an open space and line launchers up for a final fling.
  3. Incorporate math by measuring distances, converting measurements, adding/subtracting measurements, calculating mean/median/mode/range of distances.
  4. Take away, limit, or alter items (e.g. use only tape or string, cup size, rubber band size, launch item, limit popsicle sticks or switch out for straws, switch spoon material).
